District medical officer Jamuna Vargheseese urged the public to remain alert against diarrhea. Dr. Varghes said that preventive and awareness were intensified in the region.
DMO stated that cholera spreads through the feces of infected persons, mainly through contaminated drinking water and food prepared in non -hygienic conditions. Once the bacteria enter the body, the symptoms usually occur within one to five days.
The main symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and watery stools reminiscent of rice water. Cholera can lead to rapid dehydration and even death if not treated quickly. If symptoms occur, professional medical treatment should be sought immediately. Until then, the patient should be administered by ORS solution, salted rice water or lemon water mixed with salt and sugar to prevent dehydration, said Dr. Varghes.
The health department proposed chlorination of drinking water sources at regular intervals and consumption only cooked and chilled water. It urged people to boil water from plants, public tap, filters or bottled water before consuming and maintain personal hygiene.
With the approaching monsoon season, the medical department will launch an extensive campaign in schools in order to support preventive measures against diarrhea, DMO said.
