Rohit Sharma surpasses Sachin Tendulkar’s record, second fastest to 12,000 ODI runs

Rohit Sharma surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record to become the second fastest batsman to reach 12,000 ODI runs. The Indian opener reached the milestone during the ongoing second ODI against West Indies in Guwahati and got there in 282 innings, only Virat Kohli has done it faster.

Rohit entered the match 73 runs shy of the milestone after making 32 off 35 balls in the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram. He shrugged off that disappointment in Guwahati, producing a much more authoritative knock and hitting 80 off 56 balls while building a huge opening partnership with Indian skipper Shubman Gill as India chased down 406 after West Indies posted 405/7.

IND vs WI, 2nd ODI: UPDATE

The landmark took Rohit past Tendulkar’s previous mark of 300 innings. Kohli remains comfortably the fastest to reach 12,000 ODI runs in 242 innings, while Rohit has now got 282. Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara complete the top five on the batting list to reach the landmark in the fewest number of innings.

FASTEST TO 12,000 ODI RUNS

  1. 242 innings – Virat Kohli
  2. 282 innings – Rohit Sharma
  3. 300 innings – Sachin Tendulkar
  4. 314 innings – Ricky Ponting
  5. 336 innings – Kumar Sangakkara

Rohit is now only the third Indian batsman to reach 12,000 ODI runs, joining Tendulkar and Kohli in an exclusive club. Kohli himself achieved another milestone in the first ODI of the series, becoming only the second batsman after Tendulkar to cross 15,000 ODI runs while scoring an unbeaten 139 against West Indies.

ROHIT’S SECOND ODI ANSWER

The Guwahati innings also provided a sharp response to Rohit’s modest start in the series opener. He was dismissed for 32 in Thiruvananthapuram, but returned to the Barsapara Stadium with a more aggressive approach, reaching his fifty off 38 balls before making his way to a substantial score.

This is significant for Rohit in the larger context of his ODI form in 2026. Prior to this match, he had made 411 runs in 10 ODIs at an average of 41.10, including his memorable 138 against England at Lord’s. The 2027 ODI World Cup is now the larger backdrop to India’s ODI campaign, with Rohit continuing to contribute in the format even after his Test and T20I retirement.

ROHIT STILL AMONG THE ODI ELITE

Rohit’s latest milestone comes while he remains fourth in the ICC ODI batting rankings. The latest update has Shubman Gill at No.1 with 816 points, Virat Kohli at second with 796, Daryl Mitchell at third on 794 and Rohit at fourth on 753.

For India, Rohit’s contribution is more than just another record. With the team needing 406 to complete the most successful ODI run chase in their history, his partnership with Gill provided the foundation for a daunting chase, while another substantial innings would further underline his importance in building India towards the 2027 World Cup.
