Sawan Barwal is eyeing bigger successes after his Asian Games marathon silver

“This medal motivates me to work harder and aim for greater achievements for the country,” said Army athlete Sawan Barwal after winning the silver medal in the Asian Games marathon, describing the result as the culmination of years of hard work, training and sacrifice.

The 28-year-old athlete from Himachal Pradesh clocked 2:11:37 to become the first Indian to win a silver medal in the Asian Games marathon since 1982.

“Winning a medal for India at the Asian Games is a very special moment for me. Years of hard work, training and sacrifice have come behind this result and I am happy that it has come together on such a big stage,” said Barwal.

He also appreciated the support he received during his preparation, including from organizations like NMDC and Hyderabad Runners Society.

“The support I received during the preparation, including from organizations like NMDC and NMDC Hyderabad Marathon, Hyderabad Runners Society, encouraged me at important stages of my journey,” said Barwal.

Before Barwal, Hosur Kukkappa Seetharan won a bronze medal in the marathon at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.

Barwal received support from NMDC during its preparatory phase. The company supports sporting talent through individual sponsorships and other initiatives across disciplines, including kabaddi, boxing, cricket and football.
