INDIA block meeting: Joint agitation amid SIR row, impeachment notice against CEC on agenda

Top leaders of the INDIA bloc will meet in New Delhi on Wednesday (30 September 2026) to finalize an action plan for a joint agitation over alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise and push for the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, as the opposition group seeks to close ranks amid a raging row over the Election Commission’s decision.

Sources said a draft notification of a fresh motion to move a motion in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to impeach CEC (Chief Election Commissioner) Gyanesh Kumar is ready and will be taken up for approval in the meeting.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Rahul Gandhi, AICC general secretaries Jairam Ramesh and KC Venugopal, Trinamool Congress’ (TMC) Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee and leaders of parties like SP, CPI, CPI(M), NCP(SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) will attend the meeting.

While DMK and AAP have made it clear that they will not attend the meeting, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav will also not attend due to his nomination for the Rajya Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh and will send his representatives. – PTI
