The cultivation of unpeeled, impulses, gross grains and oilseeds has expanded this season of kharifs, said the Ministry of Agriculture in Nový Delhi on Monday (12 May 2025), after a meeting chaired by the Minister of the Union Shivraj Singh Chouhan. As 2nd May, sowing Paddy increased by 3.44 lakh hectares, while the sowing of impulses increased by 2.20 Lakh hectares compared to the previous year, the ministry said.
Until the above date in 2023-24, the area of Paddy was 28.57 Lakh hectares, while this year increased to 32.02 Lakh hectares. “The pulses of impulses increased to 20.67 Lakh hectares in 2024-25 compared to 18.47 Lakh hectares in 2023-24,” said the Ministry, adding that the cultivation of popular varieties such as Moong and Urad has increased by 1.70 Lakh Hectares and 0.50 Lakhhe Hectares.
At the meeting, the head officials informed the Minister of Agriculture for agriculture that in the years 2024-25 there was an increase in onion and potato sowing compared to 2023-24. “There was an increase in onion sowing by 2.82 lakh hectares, which is an increase of 9.76 Lakh hectares in 2023-24 to 12.58 lakh hectares in 2024-25. According to the ministry, tomatoes and onions are held smoothly in the current season. This season there is a sowing of three crops.
The meeting also reviewed the weather conditions and the availability of water in the reservoirs. “The total water storage situation is better than last year. The storage available in 161 tanks is 117% of the storage in the same period last year and 114% of average storage in the last 10 years,” the ministry said.
On the supply of food grain, the ministry said the actual supply of rice and wheat is higher than the level of buffer. “The actual supply of rice is 389.05 lacquer metric tons (LMT) against the bumper standard 135.80 LMT. The actual wheat supply is 177.08 LMT against the bumper standard 74.60 LMT. to any impact on waves or high temperature.
The meeting also decided to start a campaign to support scientific agriculture. Teams of agricultural scientists will visit about 700 villages in the country to support technological innovations in agriculture.
