Study identifies E. coli in 67% of water samples in Kerala’s Pala region

A water quality assessment conducted in flood-affected areas along the Meenachil River found E. coli bacteria in 67% of samples, raising concerns about the safety of drinking water sources in and around Pala.

The study, conducted by PG and Zoology Research Department of Alphonsa College, Pala, in collaboration with local administrations, analyzed water samples collected from water bodies in Pala Municipality, Karoor, Bharananganam, Erattupetta, Poonjar, Mutholy and Kidangoor. The assessment was carried out as part of efforts to mitigate the risk of water-borne diseases in flood-affected areas.

The study evaluated nine physicochemical and microbiological parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), alkalinity, chlorite, total hardness, sulfates, faecal coliform bacteria, and E. coli.

The findings showed that the TDS and pH levels in the tested samples exceeded the normal permissible range. E. coli was detected in 67% of the samples, with the researchers attributing the increase in bacterial contamination to recent floods that may have allowed contaminated surface water to enter water sources.

The assessment recommended scientific chlorination of water sources and mandatory water quality testing after each flood as key corrective measures. Recommendations were shared with local stakeholders for follow-up.

The report along with the recommendations were handed over to the Pala Municipality at a function attended the other day by Minister of Water Resources Mons Joseph.

Meanwhile, the school has started a one-year pilot study to monitor seasonal changes in water quality during pre-monsoon, pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods. The study is expected to provide a broader assessment of water quality changes across the region.

The college has also initiated steps to convert its research laboratory into a certified facility while seeking to secure recognition from the Kerala State Pollution Control Board.
