Two men have reportedly died as a result of suffocation due to a chemical leak in public toilets in Mumbai

According to preliminary information from civic authorities, two men died after they allegedly suffocated due to a suspected chemical leak at a public toilet near Mrunaltai Gore Bridge in Goregaon East early Sunday (September 27, 2026).

The deceased were identified as Prabhakar Dhanivar, 24, and Bhavin Desai, 18. Both were taken to the Trauma Care Hospital, where a doctor declared them “brought dead” at 3:49 am, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The incident took place at a public toilet opposite Parsi Panchayat gate near Mrunaltai Gore Bridge in Ram Mandir area.

According to a preliminary civic report, local residents said the two men suffered suffocation after encountering a strong chemical smell inside the toilet. However, the exact nature and source of the suspected chemical spill had not been determined as of Sunday (September 27, 2026) morning.

The incident was reported to the civic authorities at around 8.30 am after which teams from Mumbai Fire Brigade, Police, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), BMC department personnel and 108 ambulance were mobilized to the spot.

Authorities were checking the premises to determine what caused the chemical smell and whether there was any hazardous substance or gas inside the toilet.

More details were awaited about the circumstances under which the two men entered the toilet, how long they were inside and the substance suspected of causing the suffocation.
