56 dead as heavy rains lash Uttar Pradesh

As of Friday (September 25, 2026), 56 people have been killed in Uttar Pradesh in heavy thunderstorms and rain-related incidents, with at least eight districts facing a flood-like situation after an intense three-day wet spell, officials said. The state received 45.1 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending Sunday (September 27), against the normal 1.8 mm.

The highest number of deaths within 60 hours was reported from Sitapur, followed by Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, Balrampur, Ayodhya and Gorakhpur. Officials said 1,021 homes were damaged. According to the relief commissioner’s office, people from flood-affected areas have been shifted to relief centers and shelters.

According to a state government statement, the Ghagra and Rapti river levels are rising at several monitoring stations, posing a flood threat to low-lying areas.

“In view of continuous heavy rains and resulting flood situations in Uttar Pradesh, officials have been directed to provide immediate relief and assistance to the affected people. In case of loss of life and animals due to excessive rainfall, compensation should be provided immediately as per rules. Admissible compensation should be provided first to people whose houses have collapsed due to rains,” an official statement said.

At Elginbridge in Barabanki, the Ghagra was flowing at 106.14 meters above the danger level of 106.07 meters at 8 am on Sunday, September 27. The water level is likely to rise further to 106.55 meters by Sunday night. In Ayodhya, the river water level was 92.39 meters against the warning level of 91.73 meters and was forecast to rise to 92.85 meters.

Field officers have been directed to assess the crop damage as soon as possible and provide compensation to the affected farmers. “The Chief Minister has directed the officials to carry out rescue operations in the rain and flood affected areas with full seriousness so that no affected family has to face hardship during this difficult situation,” a government statement said.
