Wangchuk supports the CJP protest on October 2 against the CEC, he does not have to physically attend

Activist Sonam Wangchuk on Sunday (September 27, 2026) backed the Cockroach Janta Party’s proposed October 2 protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, saying efforts to improve the country’s accountability and electoral process deserve support.
While expressing the CJP’s support for the proposed agitation, Mr. Wangchuk added that he need not be physically present during the protest.
His comments came amid a row over the functioning of the Election Commission after an Indian Express report revealed that Election Commissioners SS Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had protested at least 14 times in the last 10 months against decisions related to voter registration, erasure and restoration of names and special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
The Electoral Commission on Saturday (September 26, 2026) said all decisions regarding the SIR received unanimous approval from all three commissioners.
It also announced measures to help voters who will be subject to notices during the review, including home visits by booth-level officials in cases involving uncharted voters and logical discrepancies, and said such people would generally not have to attend hearings in person.
Mr. Wangchuk expressed his support to the CJP for the proposed protest, but said he need not physically participate in every movement. “We definitely support anything to improve accountability in the nation, always with them,” he said.
“The whole idea of ​​supporting the movement for me is that these movements are on their own. So there are a lot of people for this issue now and I’m glad to see that, so I hope I won’t be needed on the CEC issue,” he said.
Mr. Wangchuk said the electoral process is among the most important requirements of a democratic country and needs to be improved. “If the electoral process is corrupted, what is left of democracy?” he said, adding that promises made by governments must be fulfilled.
Referring to the promise made to Ladakh in the Sixth Plan, he said, “The promises you have made should be fulfilled. For example, Ladakh was promised the 6th Plan.”
Mr. Wangchuk said he supports organizations, political parties and politicians who strive for justice and accountability, including those in the ruling BJP.
He said October 2 was a “very sacred day” because it marked the anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, whose methods of peaceful protest inspired the human rights movement.
The CJP has announced that her protest will begin in Mumbai on October 2 as part of her campaign to demand accountability from the Election Commission.
Opposition parties are also seeking action against the CEC over the SIR issues, with INDIA bloc parties expected to meet in Delhi on September 30 to discuss a coordinated response.
