Farmers’ body seeks reopening of sugar mills in Vizianagaram district

:

Farmers from various mandals urged the government to initiate steps to reopen sugar mills in the district before the Kharif season. A few years back, the main factories at Bhimasingi, Seethanagaram and other places were closed due to various reasons. A sugar mill at Sankili near Rajam has also reduced crushing in the last few seasons.

Farmers are much worried as Sankili sugar factory is reducing crushing. Farmers in the region have been growing sugar cane for decades. During the peak years, sugarcane was grown on nearly 35,000 acres. At present it has come down drastically to 3,500 acres and further decline is expected in the coming Kharif season.

Loksatta Party State President Bhisetti Babji urged MSME Minister Kondapalli Srinivas to initiate steps to revive sugar mills as they provide livelihood to many people in Jami, Bobbili, Seethanagaram and other places.

AP Ruthu Sangham Secretary B. Rambabu urged the government to protect farmers’ interests and promote sugarcane cultivation in the district. He asked the officials to hold meetings with representatives of farmers and public to discuss the revival of sugar mills in the district.
