Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, on Thursday (September 24, 2026) inaugurated a 2,000-bed hospital in Kolkata and announced a plan to invest over ₹1,000,000 crore in West Bengal by 2035 in the presence of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Mr. Adani said the ₹1,000 crore investment will cover sectors including ports, logistics, renewable energy, power generation, power transmission and distribution, roads and bridges, green cement and hyperscale data centers.
The announcement marks the first formal mention of the Adani Group’s proposal to invest in power distribution in West Bengal.
Power distribution has so far remained the monopoly of the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group through its flagship company CESC Ltd in Kolkata and Howrah.
Emphasizing that Bengal can serve as the country’s natural maritime and logistics bridge to North-East India and South-East Asia, Mr Adani said the state has the potential to become “one of the largest integrated industrial and economic platforms in Asia”.
He described Mundra Port in Gujarat as the group’s first “karmabhoomi” and expressed hope that West Bengal would become its second “karmabhoomi”. This was Gautam Adani’s first visit after Bharatiya Janata Party rule in West Bengal.
Adani Arogya Mandir, the health facility whose foundation stone was laid on September 24, is a 2,000-bed hospital spread over 51.75 acres and according to its promoters, the facility will serve more than 200,000 inpatients and more than 2 million outpatients annually.
“The heart of this institution (Adani Arogya mandir) will be a medical faculty supported by advanced research and care facilities. This will lay the foundation of a highly skilled healthcare workforce for Bengal. We are investing more than Rs 4,000 crore in this hospital, college and research facility. This institution is expected to create more than 10,000 jobs in the state’s healthcare Adani.co,” said Mr.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, while criticizing the previous Trinamool Congress government for being only interested in the politics of appeasement and support, said he looked forward to Mr Adani’s support in rebuilding Bengal. “The ultimate vision is not just a hospital campus; it will be a fully integrated healthcare city. There is no hospital of such a high standard anywhere in India. The hospital will give a big boost to medical tourism,” Mr Adhikari said.
Earlier this week, the Chief Minister met Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani at his residence and expressed hope that the Reliance Group would invest in the state. The BJP government in West Bengal is trying hard to sell the state as an investment destination.
