Weather Update: Heavy rains to continue in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha; deep depression weakens — Check IMD Alert | Today’s news
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on Friday and Saturday. The IMD issued a forecast saying that a “deep depression” lies over south Odisha and adjoining south Chhattisgarh.
Complete IMD forecast for Friday, Saturday
For Andhra Pradesh, the IMD predicted, “Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over North Coast Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on September 24 and heavy rainfall at isolated places over North Coast Andhra Pradesh is likely on September 25.”
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Chhattisgarh on 25 September and isolated heavy rainfall on 26 September.
Other states including Jharkhand Telangana, Gangetic West Bengal, East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha region may also witness heavy rains on Friday and Saturday, according to the IMD forecast.
The IMD warned of “very rough to rough” sea conditions over the central-west and north-west Bay of Bengal, “and along and off the north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha-West Bengal coast is likely to prevail till the morning of September 25 and gradually improve thereafter.”
Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the west-central and adjoining northwest and southwest Bay of Bengal and along and off the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha-West Bengal coast till Friday morning.
Deep depression “weakens”
These states are experiencing heavy rainfall under the influence of a deep depression that made landfall in neighboring Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. The IMD noted that the weather system made landfall between 11pm on Wednesday and 1am on Thursday.
“A deep depression over north Andhra Pradesh coast slowly moved west-northwest at 3 km per hour during the last six hours and crossed the coast near southwest of Kalingapatnam on September 23 at 11 pm and September 24 at 1 am,” the Met Department said in an official press release on Thursday.
According to the IMD, a deep depression is a weather system more intense than a depression but weaker than a cyclonic storm.
The IMD said the deep depression has now “weakened into a depression” and will later weaken into a “well-marked low pressure”.
“A deep depression over south Odisha and adjoining south Chhattisgarh moved north-northwest at 15 kmph during the last 6 hours, weakened into a depression and centered at 05:30 hrs IST today 25 September 2026 over south interior Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh at 2.5°N latitude. 82.5°E, near Nuapada (Odisha) and about 90 km west-northwest of Titlagarh (Odisha), 100 km north-west of Bhawanipatna (Odisha), 110 km east-northeast of Kanker (Chhattisgarh) and 120 km south-east of Raigarh,” the IMD said.
The system “is very likely to continue moving north-northwestward and maintain depression intensity during the next 12 hours and weaken into a well-defined low pressure area during the next 12 hours,” the IMD said on Friday.
The state recorded an average of 70 mm rainfall in the 24 hours till 8.30 am on Thursday, with Semiliguda in Koraput district receiving the highest at 193.9 mm, IMD sources said.
Expected impact:

❖ Loose objects can fly.
❖ Strong wind and rain can damage plantations, horticulture and standing crops.
❖ Partial damage to vulnerable structures due to strong wind and rain.
❖ Minor damage to kutcha houses/walls, huts and roads due to heavy rain.
❖ Onshore and offshore operations may be affected.
❖ Small boats, trawlers and barges may be affected.
❖ Road and rail traffic may be affected by heavy rain and gusty winds.
❖ Localized landslides, mudslides, landslides in hilly areas and water could occur
logging, flooding and inundation in low-lying areas.
❖ Occasional reduced visibility due to heavy rainfall.
❖ Helicopter services may be affected.
Recommended action:
❖ People are advised to monitor the weather for deteriorating conditions and
be prepared to move to safer places accordingly. People can stay in safe places.
❖ Fishing operations may be suspended on the morning of September 25.
❖ Surface transport may be regulated.
❖ Tourism and recreational activities will be regulated.
❖ Onshore and offshore activities must be prudently regulated.
❖ Helicopter services will be regulated.
❖ Get safe shelters; don’t hide under trees because there could be lightning.
❖ If lightning is expected, immediately unplug electrical/electronic appliances, get out of bodies of water and stay away from all objects that conduct electricity
