Dhoni was then a captain of India with Kirsten coach Team India during the ODI World Championship in 2011.
“I was very realistic about my abilities. Because I saw a lot of other people playing. And I didn’t feel like my game was close to theirs.
“That was why I had a chance to play initially for India. And Gary (Kirsten) and MS (Dhoni) made it clear to support you to play number 3. That’s what you can do for the team.
“So I have never looked at this direct winner that can change the game from anywhere. But I had the thing:” I will stay in the fight.
“And that’s what they supported. So the thing God blessed me helped me improve my game, my technique, everything. And I never was ashamed to admit that I wasn’t the most technically healthy and naturally gifted player.
“When I played, I developed a lot because I wanted to learn very much and I was very glad to improve. And I wanted to be the best. I can’t deny that I wanted to be the best.
“And the hunger, the desire to constantly improve, eventually win more games for your team is what helped me improve my game,” Kohl continued.
Kohli, 36 years old, spent half of his age representing Royal Challengers Bengalur as one of the rare players of one team in IPL. He revealed that he was considering leaving the team, but changed his mind.
“There are several others, perhaps they wouldn’t be as big names,” Kohli said as he asked to stand on the list of global sports icons such as Michael Jordan, Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Tom Brady.
“Steven Gerrard was one. Francesco Totti was one. He stayed on the Roma for all his career. I have already mentioned it. I had the opportunity to explore, look elsewhere, especially in the very main peak years of my career from 2016 to 2019, I had constant designs and switch.
“At one point it happened to me really hard because in my career it happened too much. India I am captain for 7-8 years. I have been a captain of RCB for nine years.
The rise and rise of India, Royal Challengers Bengaluu Star Virat Kohli
“There was expectation for me from the point of view of the launch.
Because I felt like if I decided to be in this place I have to be happy. Do I have to have a space in my life where I can only come and play cricket without being tried without looking at it as what you will do this season? What will happen now? That, that and the other. So I felt I wouldn’t say in temptation, but I was thinking about it. I also asked myself what’s more valuable to me? In my career I won a lot of things for India.
“So I thought, okay, what is more value for me today? I want to go to a new settings and try to think of life again? And I don’t know how the system will be, how people treat, how patient is. Mutual respect that has been created for many years.
