
March organized by the Indian Federation of Students (SFI) in protest against the controversial appointment of the Deans of the Faculty at the University of Kannura on Monday (5 May) broke into clashes and several injured and the result was several arrests.
The protest was presented in response to the alleged violation of the 1996 Kannur University Act, which stipulates that the Dean must be appointed on the basis of a rotation from the heads of the department or professors at the university.
Instead, ten individuals from external institutions were appointed, which caused extensive dissatisfaction between students and teachers communities.
When the university’s syndicate, SFI – leaded by district President TP Akhila and Taliparamba Atul secretary, stopped the place and broke the office door. The police arrested agitators and forcibly removed them, during which Atul suffered a face injury. Approximately seven activists who organized a sit-in inside were detained, while others continued protesting against both gates, which led to a long-term shock with the police. Other staff were deployed to disperse the demonstrators.
The university syndicate later went through a resolution expressing a strong opposition to appointment. Critics claimed that the selections were circumvented by their own candidates and undermined the faculty of the university. Member of Syndicate N. “This decision drew the law on Kannur University. The appointment suggests that the influence of BJP-Sangh Parivar. The named Director Sai has retirement for a month. What did the university get?” She asked.
Mrs. Sukanya demanded that the newly released list be frozen and demanded that the Chancellor and Vice -President accept a democratic appointment process.
