Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed the Power Department officials to initiate arrangements to purchase coal from the Mahanadi coalfields and Coal India. The Chief Minister was serious about stopping power generation at the Yadadri Thermal Power Center due to shortage of coal.

At a high-level review of the power sector here on Wednesday, the CM directed Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka to hold a meeting with Union Coal Minister Kishan Reddy to address the coal crisis for power generation in the state. TGGENCO officials have been ordered to start generating electricity at full installed capacity from Yadadri thermal power plant ahead of the Dussehra festival.

During the meeting, CM Revanth Reddy inquired about the details of supply of quality coal to thermal power plants in the state. Officials informed the CM that G9 grade coal is required for generation at Yadadri thermal power plant and that Singareni did not have coal blocks to produce G9 coal and it is also not possible to produce G9 coal from Singareni in near future.

The CM raised questions about the construction of the Yadadri thermal power plant using a specific technology requiring only G9 grade coal, which was not available in Singareni. The meeting reviewed in detail the construction of Yadadri thermal power station away from the pit (adjacent to coal mines) and the additional financial burden on the state due to logistics of coal supply. Officials informed the CM that the Yadadri power plant was built remotely due to political reasons during the BRS government and lack of availability of coal was the reason why full power generation could not be achieved at the Yadadri thermal power plant.

According to official reports, the additional financial burden on the state government in supplying coal to the thermal center was ₹40,000 crore.
