The sanction from the Railway Board clears a key hurdle for the elevated section of the Bengaluru Metro Pink Line

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has received Railway Board sanction for new BEML trainsets designed to run on the elevated section of the Bengaluru Metro Pink Line.

The sanction is an important prerequisite for the commissioning of the 7.5 km stretch and will be included among the documents submitted to the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for review and scrutiny, BMRCL said in a press release on Wednesday (September 23).

“The opening of the elevated section for passenger traffic will be subject to mandatory inspection and clearance by CMRS as per prescribed procedures,” the report added.

The 7.5 km stretch between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere was scheduled to open in September. Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda inspected the corridor on September 2 and said the civil and overhead structures are ready. He had earlier hinted that the section could be opened once necessary clearances are received from the Centre.

The opening schedule has changed several times. After taking charge of the portfolio, Mr Gowda initially announced that the elevated section would be operational by 15 August 2026. He also said that the remaining underground section between Tavarekere and Nagawara should be completed by March 2027.

The underground section will pass through key locations including Dairy Circle, MG Road, Shivajinagar and Tannery Road, creating a north-south link across central Bengaluru.
