IPL 2027 auction to be held in Goa in December: BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia

The IPL 2027 player auction will be held in Goa in December, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed on Wednesday, bringing the event back to India after three years overseas.

The auction was held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi in the last three editions. The 2025 mega auction was held in Jeddah, while Dubai hosted the 2024 auction and Abu Dhabi hosted the 2026 event.

“This year, after holding the IPL auction in three foreign locations, Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi last year, we will hold it in Goa in December,” Saikia told ANI.

IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal had earlier said BCCI has been trying to bring the auction back to Indiabut finding a suitable venue proved difficult due to the busy wedding season.

“Every year we try to make it happen in India, but due to the heavy wedding season, we don’t manage to do it. So we definitely want it to be here this year as it will be a smaller auction and hopefully we can get the venue,” Dhumal told PTI.

With the Goa venue confirmed, the IPL auction will return to India for the first time since 2023.

IMPACT PLAYER RULE UNDER REVIEW

The BCCI is also seeking fresh feedback from IPL franchises on the Impact Player rule, which was discussed at the recent Board of Governors meeting.

The strategic substitution rule allows teams to bring on a substitute at any stage of a match and is currently scheduled to remain in place until 2027.

However, the rule faced criticism from several prominent players, including India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill, former captain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel. One of the main concerns of players is that the rule diminishes the importance of true all-rounders.

The issue also surfaced ahead of IPL 2026 when several captains conveyed their reservations to the BCCI and calls for the rule to be scrapped gained momentum.

Dhumal said the BCCI is open to revising the rule after consulting all stakeholders.

“The matter is under discussion. We will take feedback from all stakeholders and then take a call about it,” he said.
