In view of the proposed nationwide bank strike by the United Forum of Banking Unions (UFBU) from 28 to 30 September 2026, the government has announced that all public sector banks and regional rural banks will operate as normal on Sunday (27 September 2026).

The UFBU, which claims to represent 90% of bank employees, is set to go on a three-day strike from September 28, pushing for a 5-day banking week among other things.

The strike, if it took place, would coincide with the six-month shutdown of the banking sector.

“To ensure that the genuine banking needs of the public are not adversely affected for a prolonged period, all public sector banks and regional rural banks will operate as normal on Sunday, September 27, 2026,” the statement said.

The Reserve Bank of India has given approval for all bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and tellers to remain fully functional on September 27, it said.

The Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance reiterated that the welfare and convenience of bank clients remains the government’s top priority.

The government and bank management have appealed to unions to postpone the proposed strike and also take measures to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of essential banking services, the agency said.

Banks have also advised their customers to complete basic banking transactions well in advance of the proposed strike dates to avoid any inconvenience.
