Karnataka creates SIT to investigate fraudulent insurance claims as per SC directions

The Karnataka government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to register and conduct speedy investigations into fraudulent claims received by insurance companies.

The Home Ministry issued an order on 22 September 2026 in compliance with the Supreme Court’s SLP (Civil) directions, which called for the formation of state-level special investigation teams to look into fraudulent insurance claims.

The SIT will be headed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) as its Chairman. The member will be an Inspector of Police nominated by the CID along with a Deputy Inspector of Police nominated by the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP) and three Inspectors of Police nominated by the DG&IGP.

The SIT was given jurisdiction over the whole of Karnataka and was declared a police station under Section 2(1)(u) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. Its investigating officers were empowered to submit final reports to the jurisdictional courts under Section 193 of the BNSS.

The team will function under the supervision of the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Directorate of Police, Bengaluru.

All complaints received from insurance companies regarding fraudulent claims will be referred to DG&IGP SIT for investigation. The DG&IGP will also provide the required officers and staff of the team as and when required.

The government order directs the SIT to thoroughly investigate all such complaints and submit investigation reports to the government through the DG&IGP without delay. The team will regularly report on the progress of the investigation to the DG&IGP through the ADGP (Law and Order).
