Attacks on women ‘appalling’; Centre, states should ensure security: Priyanka Gandhi

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday (Sep 22, 2026) expressed concern over recent sexual attacks on women in Delhi and Bihar, saying such “horrific” attacks were not only increasing but also becoming more violent.

She urged the Center and state governments to ensure that women can take to the streets safely.

Terming the incidents of crimes against women as “appalling”, Ms Vadra said it was always unsafe for women and now it is happening even more.

“It’s terrible. Crimes against women are only increasing. It’s not always been safe for women and it’s become more and more violent against women. I think there’s no point in talking about big plans and programs if we can’t even ensure the safety of women on our streets,” she told reporters.

In the past few weeks, there have been a number of sexual assaults on minor girls in the state capital.

On September 10, a 16-year-old girl was gangraped and killed in Swaroop Nagar; On September 16, a minor girl was sexually assaulted at a Sadar Bazar store when she went to buy stationery; and on September 21, a six-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl were sexually assaulted in the state capital in separate incidents.

In addition, in Bihar’s Jamui area, a girl and a boy were molested on the road by some men when the minors were returning home.

The Congress MP from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, who is in Kerala for a few days, said that everyone must give serious thought to the issue of women’s safety.

“So it’s really something that we all need to think about. Wherever state governments are, and especially the central government, they need to think about how they’re going to make women feel safe,” she said.

As for her plans while in Wayanad, the Congress MP said it was a longer trip so she hopes to meet as many people as possible and understand their problems in depth so that she can take appropriate action.
