Italy’s AC Milan is cleaning up the club’s head coach and general manager after a dreadful season
AC Milan have launched a dramatic overhaul following a disastrous end to their Serie A campaign, sacking head coach Massimiliano Allegri and CEO Giorgio Furlani after the club failed to secure Champions League qualification.
The Rossoneri confirmed the sweeping changes a day after a crushing 2-1 home defeat by Cagliari, a result that saw them miss out on a top-four finish by a single point. Milan took the lead but crumbled under the pressure and frustrated fans booed the team off the pitch at full-time.
In a strongly worded statement, RedBird owners described the campaign as an “unequivocal failure” and announced a major restructuring of football operations.
Milan ownership swings the ax
The club’s American ownership group made the decision following a dramatic end-of-season implosion that derailed what had once looked like a promising campaign. Milan spent much of the season in the top two and were challenging for the Serie A title before a poor run of form saw them stumble out of the Champions League places.
Just two wins in their last eight league games proved costly and Sunday’s defeat sealed their fate.
RedBird has confirmed the immediate departure of CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director of Igli Tara, head coach Massimiliano Allegriand Technical Director Geoffrey Moncada.
Former AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who currently serves as a special adviser, is the only senior football figure to retain his position.
Allegri’s return ends in disappointment
Allegri returned to Milan last year with the task of returning the club to Europe’s elite after finishing eighth in Serie A the previous season.
However, the experienced Italian failed to provide consistency when it mattered most. Allegri has recorded 22 wins, 10 draws and 10 defeats in 42 games, but Milan’s collapse in recent weeks has overshadowed earlier promise.
Ibrahimovic the key to rebuilding
He is now expected to work closely with RedBird managing partner Gerry Cardinal Ibrahimović to rebuild the football structure of the club before next season.
The process will include the appointment of a new head coach, general manager and sporting director to help Milan quickly recover from a disappointing campaign.
The club said further replacement announcements would be made in due course, with preparations for next season already underway.
