Tejashwi seeks the resignation of Samrat Choudhary over the Jamui incident

Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary over the Jamui incident in which a minor girl and a boy were molested. Mr. Yadav alleged that Mr. Choudhary was unable to run the state as law and order had broken down and the situation was alarming.

He alleged that the Chief Minister seems to be busy only lighting lamps and taking photographs while the leaders in power have been making absurd statements about the incidents.

“The Jamui incident has shamed the entire state of Bihar and the entire nation. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has said that he would resign immediately if such an incident involving women or girls happens anywhere in Bihar. If the Chief Minister is true to his word, he should resign,” Mr. Yadav said.

Now an old video of Mr. Choudhary from September 29, 2025, when he was Deputy Minister, has gone viral and he says that if this affects anyone returning home from the village at midnight, he will resign the next morning.

After becoming Chief Minister, Mr. Choudhary repeatedly said that people could travel safely through the villages of Bihar at night if they had no personal enemies.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) national labor president also criticized Janata Dal (US) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha and minister of the same party Shrawon Kumar, both of whom called the incident a chitput ghatna (sporadic incident).

Mr Yadav also took a dig at Bihar Minister Shreyasi Singh, whose controversial remarks had sparked a political debate. Speaking on a national news channel, Ms. Singh, who represents the Jamui Assembly constituency, said that moral policing can be done more decently and elegantly.

Congress Rajya Sabha member Pawan Khera criticized the minister by publishing a report on X.

“Sports Minister and Jamui Bihar MLA Shreyasi Singh says, “Moral policing can be done in a decent and classy manner. But the way a boy and a girl were mistreated and treated together is absolutely unacceptable.” So, what’s next? “Rape is OK as long as it’s ‘decent and classy’ – and not violent?” Violation—verbal, physical, emotional, psychological, or spiritual—does not become acceptable simply because it is done “politely” or “elegantly.” The problem is not the method of entry. The problem is the intrusion itself,” Mr. Khera said in the post.

Criticizing them, Mr. Yadav said the way the ruling party members commented on the Jamui incident and tried to justify it was inappropriate. He added that Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan alias Lalan Singh was trying to cover up the matter by referring to the previous government and Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh was talking about “morality policing” in this connection.

“I want to ask them: would they have spoken like this if such an incident had happened in their own families? To divert attention from the government’s shame, they made such shameful statements that brought more shame to Bihar,” Jadav said.

On the other hand, Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi indirectly criticized the RJD leader by saying that the accused arrested in the case were from the Yadav community.

“Tejashwi ji keeps saying that every ‘Yadav’ in Bihar-UP is his brother. So some of these brothers teased a girl in Jamui and made a video to defame our government. Now Tejashwi Yadav will say, ‘Samrat Choudhary shot my brother.'” I say again, Tejashwi ji, warn your brothers; otherwise Samrat’s government will spare no one. It’s “good governance Samrat,” Mr. Manjhi wrote on X.

Asked about Mr. Manjhi’s indirect attack, Mr. Yadav called it nonsense.
