Skill Development Centers in Schools Helping Students: Minister

Skill development centers have made learning in schools more practical and student-centred, General Education Minister N. Samsudheen said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the distribution of state-level certificates to those who passed the skill development center courses at Government High School, Kamaleswaram, here on Tuesday.

Mr. Samsudheen said skill development centers are important along with academics. Schools should have the means to identify students’ talents and promote them. Students could learn skills in various sectors at the skill development centres, he said.

Steps have been taken to implement more programs in schools through Samagra Shiksha Keralam, the Minister said.

The event saw the start of distribution of certificates to 8,211 students who completed courses in 210 skill development centers operating in the state administration and assisting schools in 14 districts. The minister handed over certificates to 41 students who completed courses at the center at the Government Higher Secondary School, Kamaleswaram.

Skill Development Centers functioning as part of the STARS (Strengthening Teaching-Learning and Outcomes for States) program of SSK to help students up to upper secondary level to choose suitable employment sector. They promote skills training and entrepreneurship among students, provide technology-based learning experiences and introduce them to emerging job sectors.

Project Director SSK State K. Mohanakumar presided over the function.
