Widespread rain likely across Keralam for three days; Yellow alert for seven counties on September 23

Rain is likely to spread over Kerala for three days from Wednesday (September 23, 2026), influenced by the movement of a weather system formed over the Bay of Bengal towards the east coast of the country.

According to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday, the well-marked low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression. It is very likely to move west-northwest and strengthen into a deep depression over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by Tuesday night.

The system continues to move west-northwest and is very likely to reach north coast of Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha and cross the coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur as a deep depression from Wednesday night to early hours of September 24.

The system along with a trough extending from the Southeast Arabian Sea to a cyclonic circulation associated with a depression over the central west and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, passing over Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh, is likely to enhance rain activity over Keralam during the next three days.

Yellow alert

A yellow alert was issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Wednesday, warning of isolated heavy rain, while five districts in north Kerala were also placed under yellow alert for Thursday.
