Orange and red alerts for AP as Gulf depression likely to bring heavy rain over next three days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, has issued orange warnings for northern areas of Andhra Pradesh on September 22 as a well-marked low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on Monday.

According to the weather forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, ASR, Anakapalli and Kakinada districts on Tuesday.

Rainfall intensity will increase on September 23, 24 and 25, when the system is likely to strengthen further. Barring Rayalaseema, all other districts are expected to receive widespread or fairly widespread rainfall during these three days. For Kakinada Districts, Dr. BR Ambedkar Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna and Eluru have been issued red alerts on September 23 and 24 as extremely heavy rainfall is expected at one or two places in the districts on these two days.

Other coastal and northern districts have been put on orange alert, while no such warnings have been issued in eight districts of Rayalaseema.

According to the IMD bulletin, the well-marked low pressure area intensified into a depression and was centered over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, which is about 310 km southeast of Puri in Odisha, 390 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam in AP and 470 km east of Visakhapatnam. The system is very likely to move to the west-northwest and strengthen further into a deep depression by Tuesday. Moving further west-northwestward, it is very likely to cross the north coast of Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur as a deep depression around September 24.

Kakinada receives 61 mm of rainfall

Between 8.30 am and 6 pm on Monday, Sankhavaram in Kakinada received the highest daily value of 60.75 mm, followed by Nandalur in NTR district with 52.5 mm, Peddapuram in Kakinada 48.25 mm, Durvesi in Nandyal 45.5 mm, Kavmto45 Rampakup district in NTR 39.31 mm and D. Hirehal in Anantapur 35.5 mm. Many other stations in Anakapalli, Srikakulam, Chittoor, Nandyal, NTR, Markapuram and SPSR Nellore districts received light to moderate showers.

The AP State Disaster Management Authority has warned fishermen against entering the sea as it is expected to remain rough for the next four days.
