Kerala University exits K-REAP amid exam glitches

Kerala University has decided to discontinue the Kerala Resources for Education Administration and Planning (K-REAP) e-governance software introduced by the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government to integrate activities carried out by all institutions.

The decision to abandon enterprise resource planning software comes amid the detection of errors in the results of various investigations.

The Syndicate has formally withdrawn the results of the First and Fourth Semester Supplementary Examinations under the Four Year Undergraduate Program (FYUGP) due to alleged errors in the results generated through the K-REAP software.

Serious irregularities

Official sources said several serious irregularities were found, including results not appearing in student profiles, results being generated for non-existent subjects, changes in marks obtained in remedial examinations and students proving they had passed subjects they had not passed. As a result, the university has decided to withdraw the results and take action to remove the errors.

The university’s decision to abandon K-REAP also comes amid concerns over whether the system can reliably handle the registration and conduct of FYUGP Semester 1, 3 and 5 exams scheduled for October and November. There is also concern over the system’s ability to handle the academic demands of students progressing to the fourth year of the FYUGP.

The syndicate also noted that K-REAP does not provide facilities needed for certain FYUGP processes, including credit transfer for students entering fourth year, awarding of credit for online and supplementary courses, and the ability to complete the program a semester ahead of schedule.

The problem prompted the university to restore trial software developed by its Computer Center. The center will also be strengthened to provide greater control over exam dates and allow the university to intervene directly in case of technical or result-related issues.

K-REAP was conceived as an integrated digital platform for university administration, including admissions, examinations and student lifecycle management. Kerala State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) is the implementing agency while ASAP Kerala has been entrusted with implementation. Its implementation includes Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Ltd. (MKCL) as a knowledge partner.

Incidentally, Kannur University recently launched an investigation into various problems attributed to the software based on complaints from teachers and students. Mahatma Gandhi University and Calicut University continue to operate examination related systems under their own control, the Syndicate noted.

Software by universities

Meanwhile, the Save University Campaign Committee has requested the Chief Minister, Higher Education Minister and KSHEC to take steps to withdraw K-REAP from educational institutions in Kerala and instead make the software developed and operated by the respective universities operational.

In addition, universities should retain direct control over the system, which should not be operated by a third-party agency to address exam security concerns and ensure the integrity of student data.
