Asian Games 2026: India’s medals today, results and highlights as Elavenil Valarivan leads first charge

Elavenil Valarivan; and the Indian women’s 10m air rifle team with their silver medals The 2026 Asian Games began in Aichi-Nagoya on Sunday and India got off to a flying start to their medal campaign, winning two silver medals in the women’s 10m air rifle event.

Elavenil leads India’s medal charge

Elavenil Valarivan was at the center of India’s medal rush as he won the individual silver after earlier helping the country secure silver in the team event along with Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod.In the individual final, Elavenil scored 252.4 points to finish behind Japan’s Hinata Taichi, who won gold with an Asian Games record 253.0. Hyojin Ban of South Korea won the bronze with 230.4.Elavenil entered the final two shots just 0.3 points behind Taichi and remained firmly in contention after shooting 10.4 to the Japanese marksman’s 10.6, extending the gap to 0.5 points. Elavenil, who needed a strong final blow to turn the tables, managed 10.1 but Taichi held her nerve with 10.2 to seal the gold and set a new Asian Games record.The individual silver was Elavenil’s second medal of the day after she teamed up with Maskar and Vidarsa to finish second in the women’s 10m air rifle team event on Sunday.India now has two shooting medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, both silver. The encouraging start comes after Indian shooters bagged a record 22 medals, including seven gold, nine silver and six bronze, at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Suchika secures the medal; the hockey campaign begins

Mixed martial arts fighter Suchika Tariyal also secured a medal for India after reaching the semi-finals of the women’s 60kg traditional MMA competition.India’s hockey campaign also began on Sunday. The women’s team beat Uzbekistan 19-0 in their first game. The men’s side will face Indonesia in their opening match.Indian athletes were also in action in table tennis, badminton and cricket as the country kicked off its campaign in several disciplines on the opening day.
