The Telangana High Court awarded one month imprisonment to a police officer in a contempt case

Justice K. Sujana of the Telangana High Court has sentenced police officer A. Krishnaiah, who went on sick leave while serving as LB Nagar Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in Malkajgiri police station, to a month’s imprisonment in a contempt of court case. The judge also imposed a fine of ₹2,000 on the police officer.

The judge, however, stayed the sentence till October 19, giving Krishnaiah an opportunity to file an appeal on the plea of ​​public prosecutor Home Palle Nageshwar Rao. The contempt petition was filed by Katta Vamshi Krishna alleging that Krishnaiah arrested him in the dowry death case despite a special order issued by the HC granting him protection from arrest.

The K. Sujan Court on April 21 issued an order not to arrest the petitioner until April 23 and further extended the order on April 27. However, Krishnaiah, who was the investigating officer, arrested the petitioner on April 28 and produced him before a local court, which refused to remand the petitioner on hearing that the HC had passed the protection of an arrest warrant in the case.

“It was up to him to determine whether said protection was extended,” the judge said. The officer cannot claim he was unaware of the orders issued by the court, the judge said.
