A militiaman posted to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Vikarabad police was arrested and dismissed from service after a video shared on social media platforms showed him allegedly slapping a woman and dragging her by the hair for about 200 meters near Hafeezpet railway station.
The incident took place on Friday evening and the accused has been identified as Kadiga Anand, 36, Home Guard No. 379, a resident of Govindapur village in Vikarabad district. He has been in service for the last 14 years. The video of the incident, which was reported between 8.30pm and 9pm on Friday (September 18) night, was captured by locals.
In the video, Anand is seen slapping the woman. After she falls to the ground, he is seen grabbing her hair and dragging her about 200 meters.
Telangana Director General of Police CV Anand took cognizance of the video and responded to X, describing the behavior as “heinous” and calling for immediate action.
“Such behavior by our personnel, irrespective of rank and any provocation, cannot be condoned. It is despicable and in total disregard of all instructions and training,” the DGP said.
He said investigations revealed that the man was a Home Guard on deputation to the RPF and was not with the local police. The DGP said he would be dismissed from service and face prosecution and directed Cyberabad Police Commissioner M Ramesh to take immediate action.
The Miyapur police subsequently registered a suo motu case and arrested Anand. He was booked under Sections 74 and 118(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deal with assaulting or using criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty and voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means.
Mr. Ramesh later said that Anand had been removed from his role as a Home Guard and his name would be struck from the list.
“We have zero tolerance for crimes against women,” the commissioner said. He added that Anand has been arrested and taken into police custody and will be produced before the court. Further investigation is underway.
