Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen has won the post of vice-president in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections for 2026-27, defeating candidates backed by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
Shokeen emerged as the highest voter among the four newly elected office bearers of DUSU, polling 30,615 votes. ABVP’s Ishu Maurya finished behind him with 16,910 votes.
The victory came after Shokeen, who was earlier associated with the NSUI, decided to contest the elections independently after being denied the organisation’s ticket.

Deepanshu Shokeen is an independent candidate who has won the post of Vice President in Delhi University Students’ Union for the term 2026-27. Hailing from Peeragarhi village in Delhi, he comes from a humble family with his father working as a bus conductor.
Shokeen decided to contest independently after he was denied a ticket by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), an organization with which he was earlier associated.
In the DUSU elections, Deepanshu Shokeen won the vice president post with 30,615 votes defeating ABVP candidate Isha Maurya who got 16,910 votes.
The candidates prioritized issues such as campus security and affordable housing, especially in light of recent incidents affecting student welfare, including the building collapse at Satya Niketan.
The counting process for the DUSU elections was ensured with the deployment of over 2,000 police and paramilitary personnel across Delhi University to ensure order during the counting of votes.
Shokeen is a native of West Delhi’s Peeragarhi village. He comes from a humble family background, his father Rakesh Shokeen works as a Delhi Transport Corporation bus conductor and his mother as an Anganwadi teacher.

According to reports, he has been involved in student politics since 2023. His association with the NSUI preceded his decision to contest the DUSU elections as an independent.

His father said the decision to contest independently came after Shokeen was denied a NSUI ticket.

“We came to know that he was fielded on 9/11 for NSUI ticket. That’s when he decided to fight independently,” his father Rakesh Shokeen told PTI.
Why did Deepanshu Shokeen compete independently?
Shokeen criticized what he described as “organizational deficiencies in the NSUI” and questioned the process by which candidates were selected.
An NSUI official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described his independent candidature as a challenge to the organisation’s ticket distribution process.

“The denial of the ticket and his subsequent fight as an independent candidate has turned into an open challenge to the organization’s ticket distribution process,” an NSUI functionary said on condition of anonymity.
What problems did Shokeen cause?
Student accommodation, university infrastructure and politics were among the issues raised by Shokeen during his campaign. He said his own experiences with these issues shaped his decision to run for office.
“Whether it is the issue of hostel facilities, university infrastructure or politics, I have faced all of them myself. This election was fought on all these student-centric issues,” he told PTI.
Shokeen also said that his campaign was not only about winning the electoral contest, but about representing students and highlighting their concerns.
“Fighting elections was not my only motive; I represented all students and their problems. I am here to raise their voice,” he said.
Shokeen’s stealth campaign
Shokeen’s campaign attracted attention for its relatively low-key approach. He ran a bare-bones campaign, focusing on direct interaction with students rather than relying on a high-cost campaign.
Hostels and accommodation facilities were among the prominent issues he raised, especially due to concerns about student accommodation in Delhi.
His independent victory secured one of the four central DUSU posts, while the ABVP won the remaining three.
What did Deepanshu Shokeen say after winning?
After the results were announced, Shokeen thanked the students of Delhi University in a post on X, saying his victory represented students who wanted their concerns raised on campus.
“This victory is not mine. It belongs to every student who wants to highlight real issues on campus. The independent fight was not easy, but you proved that student trust exceeds student organizations,” his post read.
He also said the victory increased his responsibility to the students.
“I will become the voice of every student. Revolution, comrades. Victory for Hindu. Victory for Delhi University,” he further said.
