Rachin Ravindra injured in promo shoot accident, India T20 in doubt

Rachin Ravindra’s participation in New Zealand’s upcoming five-match T20I series against India has been thrown into doubt after the all-rounder dislocated his right shoulder during a promotional shoot in Auckland. Ravindra sustained the injury on Wednesday while attempting a catch during the shoot and landed awkwardly on the safety pad.

Doctors assessed Ravindra on Friday and ruled out major structural damage. However, the timeline for his return to action will depend on his progress during the early stages of his rehabilitation, so his availability for the India series is uncertain. India’s tour of New Zealand is set to begin next month and the hosts are set to announce their squad next week.

New Zealand executive manager Mike Sandle said Ravindra’s injury was an accident and his recovery would be a priority.

“It was a really unfortunate injury,” Sandle said. “We are gutted for Rachin and our key priority is to make sure he recovers well and gets back on the field as soon as possible.”

“As with all commercial filming involving our players, the activities were pre-agreed upon by all parties, with appropriate safeguards in place. This was a bit of a freak accident and we will continue to review our processes around events such as this in the future.”

NEW ZEALAND BEWARE OF INJURY TO RACHIN RAVINDRA

Ravindra has established himself as an important part of New Zealand’s white-ball set-up, offering value with both bat and ball. He played 52 T20Is, scoring 759 runs with a top score of 69 while taking 26 wickets with best figures of 4/27.

The 26-year-old’s absence would leave New Zealand without one of their key all-rounders for the India series, although his rehabilitation will determine whether he can recover in time.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter indicated the team would proceed with caution, especially with a busy Test schedule.

“With a tough Test cricket schedule over the next six months, we don’t want to rush Rachin back any sooner than necessary. He is in great hands in terms of his rehabilitation and we look forward to welcoming him back soon,” Walter said.

New Zealand will begin their home series against India in the first T20I on October 22. The remaining four matches will follow before the teams move on to the ODI and Test leg of the tour.
