Asian Games 2026: Quimcy Dsouza lost in Teqball semi-final to fight for bronze

Quimcy Dsouza (ANI Photo) India’s Quimcy Joaquim Dsouza suffered a 1-2 defeat to Indonesia’s Ima Sumaya in the 2026 Asian Games Teqball women’s singles semi-final on Saturday. The 24-year-old will now face Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto in the bronze medal match on Sunday.A win in the bronze medal match would give India its first ever teqball medal at the Asian Games, where the sport is making its debut at the Aichi-Nagoya edition.

Quimcy loses semi-final after strong start

Making her Asian Games debut, Quimcy started the semi-finals with confidence, winning the opening set 12-7. Sumaya responded in the second set, recovering from an early deficit to take the lead and tie the match with a 12-9 win.Quimcy started the decision strong, racing out to a 3-0 lead before making it 4-1. However, Sumaya fought back, taking control of the set and closing out the match 12-7 to book her place in the final.The defeat ended Quimcy’s gold medal hopes, but he will have another opportunity to finish his debut Asian Games campaign on the podium.

Indian topped the group with wins over Japan and Cambodia

Quimcy secured their place in the semi-finals after dominating Group A with two wins, earning direct passage to the last four and avoiding the quarter-finals. She opened her campaign with an impressive 2-1 win over top seed Yuina Sakamoto of Japan. After losing the first set 10-12, Quimcy fought back to take the second 12-11 before securing the deciding score 13-11.She followed up that performance with a straight sets victory over Cambodia’s Koemyean DY, winning 12-9, 12-7 to top her group. Quimcy also competed in mixed doubles alongside Mohamed Anas Imran Beg. The Indian pair defeated Jhoana Abulencio and Prince Agustin of the Philippines in their opening Group A match.

Teqball debuts at the Asian Games

Invented in Hungary, Teqball combines elements of soccer and table tennis using a curved table. The sport resembles a mixture of freestyle football and sepak takraw. It will make its Asian Games debut at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 with five medal events: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.Quimcy will now look to cap off his premiership campaign with a medal when he takes on Sakamoto in Sunday’s bronze medal match.
