No major progress in the Muvattupuzha robbery case
The Muvattupuzha police are yet to trace the culprit of the alleged robbery of 10 sovereigns of gold ornaments belonging to a bedridden elderly woman who lives alone, except for the assistance of a maid, at her home on Sunday (May 24, 2026) morning.
The police took the maid, a native of Tamil Nadu hired almost six months ago, into custody. She was later released after a detailed interrogation. The accused allegedly locked the maid in the bathroom before committing the robbery.
The police are also verifying the CCTV footage of the area to trace the culprit. The robbery happened in the morning while the victim’s brother and his family, who live next door, were away at church. Police suspect that the crime could not have been timed without accurate information shared by someone familiar with it. The victim, who is in her 60s, retired as a senior nurse from a hospital in Jaipur.
Allegedly, the accused entered the house through the front door, which remained unlocked. The victim, who was sleeping, woke up after an alleged attempt to steal the ornaments she was wearing. When she screamed, the defendant allegedly gagged her. The maid, who rushed to the room when she heard the victim’s cries for help, was then allegedly locked in the bathroom.
About a month ago, a gold bracelet, RC book and PAN card were lost in the household. However, no complaint was filed with the police as it was unclear whether the victim, who is said to be suffering from memory problems, had set them up.
