India vs Brazil: AIFF offers 14,000 discounted club tickets in Kolkata

The All India Football Federation has announced more than 14,000 discounted tickets for members and supporters of Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting for India’s much-anticipated friendly match against Brazil. The move aims to bring Kolkata’s football community to the stands for one of the biggest games in Indian football in recent years.

India will face Panama on September 25 in Bengaluru before returning to Kolkata for talks with Brazil on October 3 and Uruguay on October 6. Speaking to the media in Kolkata on Thursday, AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey explained how supporters of the city’s three traditional giants can get access to discounted tickets.

“If any club needs tickets, they can inform the IFA about how many tickets are required. Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting will set aside a dedicated space in their stadium for selling tickets,” Chaubey said.

“This way, members or fans of the respective clubs can pick up tickets directly at their club marquee. Clubs will request tickets through the IFA, who will manage the allocation at discounted prices,” he added.

Seats have been reserved in the B2 and D2 middle tier sections behind two wickets and will also be available to clubs registered with the Football Association of India. The initiative comes after general sale tickets for the match in Brazil sold out quickly, with public prices ranging from Rs 999 to Rs 15,000.

KOLKATA’S FOOTBALL FANS GET A BOOST

AIFF also plans to take the excitement beyond the city through fan parks in various districts. Chaubey said the initiative could give young players and supporters of academies outside Kolkata an opportunity to experience matches together on big screens.

“In terms of promoting local football, even though the direct reach of the AIFF is limited, we are proposing to create Fan Parks across the districts so that academy kids and fans outside Kolkata can watch the matches together on big screens,” he said.

The federation is also preparing for Brazil’s arrival, with a five-member delegation from the Brazilian Football Confederation inspecting the venue and match conditions. Chaubey said the delegation was positive about the preparations.

BRAZIL, URUGUAY BLUE TIGERS TEST

After the Durand Cup and the monsoon, there were concerns about the pitch at Salt Lake Stadium, but Chaubey said the playing surface has improved and should be in better shape by October 3. Two practice fields next to the stadium are also being prepared for visiting teams.

The three FIFA Tier-1 friendlies present an unusual test for India, with all three opponents ranked in the world’s top 50. Brazil have never played a senior international in India, while Uruguay last faced India in Kolkata in 1982.

“Don’t think India has ever played against such high-ranked teams in the last 40 years. You have to look at the long-term contribution of the country,” Chaubey said.

For Khalid Jamil’s side, the matches offer a rare opportunity to test themselves against much taller opposition, while Kolkata football fans will get a chance to watch Brazil and Uruguay at home.
