Power cuts have become the norm in the state: Anbumani Ramadoss

PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss said on Wednesday that though the state government had said that steps had been taken to purchase 2,000 MW of power to reduce power outages, there was no progress on the ground.

In a statement, he pointed to an incident where Revenue Minister KA Sengottaiyan had to give an interview to the media with the help of a mobile phone flashlight due to a sudden power cut in Vellore and said it illustrated how unannounced power cuts had become the norm across the state.

“Tamil Nadu’s demand, which peaked at 20,500MW-21,000MW during summer, remains at the same level even now as temperatures have not dropped. This is 4,000MW higher compared to September last year. The reason for the power outages is that the Tamil Nadu government has not made adequate provision for electricity to meet this additional demand.”

He added, “People are protesting against the power cuts being imposed everywhere from Chennai to the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. However, the power cut has still not been lifted. Officials usually ensure that there are no power cuts in areas where ministers participate in programmes. But if the power supply is cut despite the efforts of the officials, it means there is a shortage of electricity.”
