Boxing Asian Games medalists will gain direct entry to the 2027 World Championships

Indian boxers who win medals at the 2026 Asian Games will get a direct ticket to next year’s World Boxing Championships, which will serve as the first qualifying event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) announced the selection framework on Wednesday.

The federation has drawn up a detailed qualification plan to ensure that India sends the largest possible contingent to the LA Games. The system consists of four stages and was designed in accordance with the qualification path formulated by World Boxing and approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The 2027 World Boxing Championships will begin the qualification process, with the Asian qualifiers in China and two more world qualifiers in 2028 completing the journey. The final events are set to take place in Italy and Hungary.

“Medalists from the 2026 Asian Games will be selected as the main entry in their respective weight categories. Gold medalists from the 10th Elite National Championship will serve as the alternate entry in that weight category,” said a circular issued by the BFI this week.

As per the BFI selection criteria, the gold medalist from the 10th Elite National Championship will be the primary participant in the weight divisions where India will not win a medal from the Asian Games. The same rule will apply to the Olympic weight categories, which are not afraid of the Asian Games.

There is also a provision for boxers who reach the quota bout stage at the World Championships but do not meet the Olympic quota. They will have direct access to the Asian qualifiers.

All remaining places will be decided on the basis of evaluations based on selection tests involving members of the national camp. Boxers will first have to earn entry into the camp through established qualification paths before becoming eligible for tryouts.

The same selection mechanism will subsequently be used to determine India’s entries for the two World Qualifiers in 2028.

“This policy has been created to provide our boxers with a clear and structured path to Los Angeles 2028, built on consistent performance at the National Coaching Camp and World Boxing qualifying events,” said BFI President Ajay Singh.

The National Coaching Camp will initially include medal winners from the 10th Elite National Championship, Asian Games medalists and wild card selections made by the BFI selection committee as per the policy.

For non-Olympic weight categories, the national champion will be India’s main entry for the 2027 World Championships, while the silver medalist will be kept as a reserve.
