Six policemen suspended over death of pregnant woman; SP workers are playing a sit-in

Six police personnel, including two sub-inspectors, have been suspended by the Superintendent of Police following the death of a pregnant woman in Firozabad’s Shikohabad area. A woman was allegedly kicked in the stomach by an ambush team while they were arresting her husband, who is accused of theft.

Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Ravi Shankar Prasad said Superintendent of Police Aditya Langhe has suspended sub-inspectors Dharmpal Singh and Satyapal Singh, head constables Mohan Singh and Arvind Kumar and constables Bhavtosh Kumar and Kuldeep Kumar with immediate effect on Monday 1/4. September 26

He said the postmortem of the woman was conducted late at night and her last rites were performed the same night. A large number of police were deployed during the proceedings.

The matter took a political turn on Tuesday (September 15) when Samajwadi Party National General Secretary Ramjilal Suman staged a sit-in at the Shikohabad police station along with party workers and demanded registration of a case of murder against the policemen involved in the incident.

“We have met the police officials and demanded that a case of murder be registered against the accused policemen in connection with the death of a Dalit woman named Anjali. The police have asked for three days,” Suman told PTI.

Earlier, a SP delegation accompanied by Mr. Suman visited Labhaua village and met the family of the deceased to express their condolences and get details of the incident.

Newborn critical

According to the family, Sub-Inspector Dharmpal Singh arrived at Mr Gaurav’s house in Labhaua village with a police team around 11.45 pm on Sunday to arrest him in connection with the theft case. The family claimed that when Mr Gaurav’s pregnant wife Anjali, 28, started pleading with the police not to take her husband away, Mr Singh kicked her in the stomach, causing her to fall.

After the police arrested Gaurav (32), Anjali’s condition deteriorated and she was admitted to a hospital in Shikohabad, where she gave birth to a boy on Monday (September 14) morning. The newborn was sent to Agra in a critical condition, the family said.

Her condition worsened after the delivery and she was taken to a private hospital in Firozabad where doctors declared her brought dead. Her relatives said, adding that the police released Mr. Gaurav after learning about Anjali’s death.

After her death, family members said outraged villagers staged a protest at the police station.
