Mohsin Naqvi decided to take drastic action; Aaqib Javed, Wahab Riaz could face the axe

Mohsin Naqvi and Aaqib Javed (Image Agency) Pakistan cricket could be headed for another overhaul, with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi reportedly preparing sweeping changes following the Test team’s disastrous tour of England.Pakistan were beaten 0–3 in the Test series in England, a result that moved them to ninth in the ICC rankings. The bad run has already triggered significant changes, including the dismissal of two coaches and a major reshuffle of the playing staff.Now, according to a PTI report, the Pakistan Cricket Board is considering changes to the national selection committee, with former Test cricketer Aaqib Javed among those who could be removed from his role as chief selector.

A PCB source said Naqvi recognized the need for drastic measures following the ongoing instability around the national party.“Even Mohsin Naqvi has now realized that some radical measures are required to end the streak of defeats and sudden events in Pakistan cricket. So these changes are now in play,” an inside source said.Javed was at the center of the controversial changes made to Pakistan’s Test team earlier this month, shortly after the team lost the Lord’s Test against England.Seven players were sent home after this defeat, while head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul were also relieved of their duties. Javed has also previously faced criticism for frequent changes in Pakistan’s coaching staff and captaincy.Any upheaval could go beyond the men’s selection committee.Wahab Riaz, another former Pakistan bowler currently working as a mentor for the women’s team, is expected to be relieved of his duties after the Asian Games campaign in Japan later this month.The PCB’s decision to make changes to the coaching set-up during the England tour was also linked to Mike Hesson’s growing interest in taking charge of the men’s team across all formats.The New Zealand coach is currently Pakistan’s white-ball coach, but sources said he has shown keen interest in taking over the role in all formats.At the same time, the PCB was in talks with several foreign coaches for the vacant post of head coach of the women’s team after the Asian Games.“Naqvi will soon hold a high-level meeting with his aides and also take the governing council members into confidence before final decisions are taken on the changes,” the source said.

Hesson wants to be clear before taking on the red ball role

However, Hesson made his expectations clear before agreeing to take over Pakistan’s red-ball setup.He said he needed enough time to get the system up and running and wanted a confirmed timeframe for the award. Hesson also sought assurances that he would not be allowed to interfere with his decision-making.With Naqvi now preparing to consult with his associates and the PCB, Pakistan cricket may be set for another round of major changes in the coming days.
