Keralam to introduce hazard perception test for driving license aspirants

The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) will introduce a mandatory computer-based “Hazard Perception Test” for driving license applicants from December 2026 as part of measures to improve road safety and assess applicants’ ability to identify potential road hazards.

Designed according to international standards, the test will have a format similar to a video game. Applicants will be required to take the test within 30 days of passing the learner test, and only those who pass the on-road and road tests can take part. The test will include 10-minute videos depicting situations and potential hazards that drivers may encounter on the road.

Each video will contain at least two hazards that candidates will have to identify by pressing a button at the appropriate moment. Failure to identify hazards at the correct time will result in marks being deducted. Candidates will receive 10 points for each correct answer and will need to secure at least 60 points out of 100 to pass the test.

The Transport Commissioner ordered the online test to be conducted from December in view of the rise in road accidents in Kerala. Although the test is being introduced for the first time in the country, the provision for conducting such an assessment is already included in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules.

Recognized driving schools have been ordered to train applicants for the new test within the next three months. The MVD expects the test to help drivers recognize dangers in advance and take appropriate measures to safely operate their vehicles.
