Ben Shelton didn’t take time off after his US Open final loss

Ben Shelton is wasting little time getting back on court after his run to the US Open final, with the American set to represent his country in the Davis Cup this week.

Shelton was named to the USA Davis Cup team on Monday for the second round of qualifying against the Czech Republic in Prague. He will then join Team World at the Laver Cup in London the following weekend.

The 22-year-old lost to Alexander Zverev in his first Grand Slam final on Sunday. Despite the defeat, Shelton moved to a career-high No. 4 in the ATP rankings on Monday.

The Davis Cup appearance will be Shelton’s second for the United States and his first since the 2024 final.

Learner Tien, Martin Damm, Christian Harrison and Austin Krajicek were also named to Team USA. Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul withdrew from the team.

Tien reached the fourth round of the US Open, while Damm swept eventual semifinalist Frances Tiafoe to five sets in the first round. Twenty-year-old Tien and twenty-two-year-old Damm will make their first appearance in the Davis Cup.

The USA will face the Czech Republic on Friday and Saturday in a best-of-five playoff on the indoor hard court at Prague’s O2 Arena. The Czech squad includes Jakub Menšík, Jiří Lehecká, Tomáš Macháč and Vít Kopřiva.

The winner advances to November’s Davis Cup final in Bologna, Italy.

Shelton will then head to London for the Laver Cup to represent Team World. Team Europe will be represented by Zverev, who defeated Shelton in the US Open final.

Several other top players will also feature in Davis Cup matches this week, including Alex de Minaur for Australia, Stefanos Tsitsipas for Greece and Casper Ruud for Norway.

India will take on South Korea, while other matches include Chile vs Spain, Britain vs Ecuador, Austria vs Belgium and Canada vs France.

A total of 52 countries will be competing at various levels of the Davis Cup this weekend.
