Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland may no longer remain part of the United Kingdom. The three political parties issued a joint statement demanding the right of their people to decide.
Their message is straightforward: the people should have the power to decide the future of the UK. The statement brings together Scotland’s Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru from Wales and Sinn Féin.
They promise closer cooperation while pursuing different paths to change their relationship with Britain. However, this deal in itself will not break up the UK or call for any referendum.

The United Kingdom consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland and Wales have movements seeking independence, while Sinn Féin wants a united Ireland.
This would mean that Northern Ireland would join the Republic of Ireland, which already exists independently. The statement says these nations have different histories, identities and political traditions. They argue that their people deserve better opportunities and stronger voices about their future.
“We share the belief that the peoples and communities we represent deserve greater ambition, greater economic opportunity and a stronger voice in determining their own future. The political landscape in these islands is changing,” the joint statement said.
Its strongest demand concerns the political leadership of the three nations. All three now have first ministers who have pledged to leave the UK, according to the statement. The parties describe this as evidence that Westminster’s authority is coming to an end.
The statement also links the independence debate with everyday worries about jobs and bills. Her economic proposals include sharing ideas, creating good jobs and spreading wealth more equitably. The parties criticize the UK government’s economic approach and say their communities need something better.

The joint statement calls for a “stronger and fairer economy”. Nations want to share “ideas and experiences on how to build productive, prosperous economies that create good jobs, tackle inequality and ensure a fairer distribution of wealth and opportunity”.
“We reject Whitehall’s broken economic model and will instead build economies that deliver social justice and reduce inequality between our nations,” the statement added.
Energy is another major area where they want to cooperate. They prioritize the development of renewable resources to reduce electricity costs for families and businesses. Their argument is that local energy wealth should directly benefit local people.
Too bad about Brexit
Europe forms the third important part of their joint cooperation plan. The parties say Brexit has damaged their economies and reduced opportunities for their people.
They see the future of their nations within the European Union and want stronger European relations. These ties, they say, could promote trade, investment, culture and wider cooperation.
“Europe is our common home and we believe that the future of our peoples belongs to the European Union,” the statement said.

The Telegraph previously reported on September 13 about a meeting in Cardiff to strengthen the joint campaign. The report named John Swinney, Rhun ap Iorwerth and Michelle O’Neill as the three first ministers.
The report also described pressure for a possible public vote on the future of the UK. Andy Burnham has rejected the idea of another Scottish referendum before the next general election, according to a report.
