Pakistan’s England nightmare deepens: 11 WTC points anchored, 50% match fee in order – here’s why

(AP photo) NEW DELHI: Pakistan’s disastrous 0-3 Test series defeat against England was compounded by a significant over-penalty that saw the side forfeit 11 World Test Championship points and be fined 50 per cent of their match fee after the Edgbaston Test.During the third and final Test in Birmingham, which England won by eight wickets to complete the series 3–0, Pakistan were found 11 over-rate short.“Pakistan have been hit with two penalties for maintaining a slow overs during the third and final match of the ICC World Test Championship against England in Birmingham,” the ICC said.
11 point deduction and maximum fine
Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC’s elite panel of umpires imposed the penalty after on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Allahudien Palekar and fourth umpire Russell Warren leveled the charges.Pakistan captain Babar Azam admitted the offense and accepted the proposed sanction, meaning a formal hearing was not required.The deduction further erodes Pakistan’s position at the bottom of the WTC table, leaving it ninth with a points percentage of 4.63.Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined five percent of their match fee for anyone who fails to play in their side’s time, with the maximum penalty capped at 50 percent.“Pursuant to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum overcharge offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for their team not bowling within the stipulated time, with the maximum penalty capped at 50 per cent of the match fee.”A deficit of over 11 points also resulted in an 11-point deduction under WTC playing conditions.“Furthermore, under Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, a side is penalized one point for each boundary crossed. The penalty adds to a miserable WTC campaign for Pakistan, who have just two wins and seven defeats from nine Tests and now languish in ninth place in the standings.England wrapped up the series with an eight-wicket win at Edgbaston. Pakistan were bowled out for 133 in their first innings before England posted 453 to take a 320-run lead.Pakistan were struggling for 449 in their second innings with Shan Masood scoring 95, Babar 76 and debutant Razaullah 81. Razaullah and Mohammad Abbas added 121 for the ninth wicket.But England needed just 130 and reached 130/2, with Joe Root not out on 62 and Jordan Cox on 59.England had earlier won the series opener at Headingley by an innings and 103 runs and the second Test at Lord’s by 194 runs.Pakistan’s next WTC mission comes in November when they host Sri Lanka for a two-Test series in Rawalpindi and Lahore.
