529 child laborers rescued in Bengaluru; 105 cases registered

As many as 529 child laborers were rescued and 105 cases were registered against the employers during a special operation conducted by the Bengaluru city police on Saturday.

The intervention was carried out on September 12 at the behest of senior police officers. Special teams comprising police personnel and Labor Department officials conducted surprise checks at 6,076 commercial establishments, industrial areas and other places across the city.

The rescued children were found working in various facilities and were subsequently taken into the care of the relevant authorities for further action.

Police said 105 cases have been registered so far against shopkeepers and other employers who allegedly employed children as labourers. The cases were registered according to the provisions of the Child and Juvenile Labor Act (Prohibition and Regulation) and the Juvenile Justice Act.

Among the city divisions, Western Division recorded the highest number of rescued children at 103, followed by North with 66, Central with 63, South with 52 and North East with 47.

CCB rescued 45 children and recorded the highest number of cases at 26, while Eastern Division rescued 74 children and registered 18 cases. The Northeast Division registered 17 cases, while the West 15.

Police said action against establishments employing children would continue.
