The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has accused Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister Ponguru Narayan of being involved in a ₹1,200 crore waste management scam.

YSRCP Nellore district president Kakani Govardhan Reddy and MLC Parvathareddy Chandrasekhar Reddy raised 12 questions regarding alleged irregularities in solid waste collection, heritage clearance, purchase of equipment and viability of the plant and demanded an explanation from the minister.

At a media conference here on Sunday, the two leaders questioned how the official figure for waste clearance increased from 85 to 163 million tonnes without the required administrative approvals.

“Suppliers were paid around ₹800 per tonne, leading to unauthorized payments of additional 15% volume allowance. This cost the exchequer a loss of ₹60 crore,” alleged Mr Chandrasekhar Reddy.

“The exact amount of waste dug up from underground across different local bodies should be made public. We need to know who is really benefiting from the cleanliness drive,” said Mr. Govardhan Reddy.

Both the YSRCP leaders also called on the minister for an open discussion on the issue.
