Widespread rain, thunderstorms cover most of India till September 19: IMD | Today’s news
New Delhi: Some parts of India are likely to experience moderate to widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects wet spells to persist over northwest, central, east, northeast and western regions till September 19.
Over northwest India, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad are likely to experience moderate to widespread thundershowers and lightning during September 15-17. Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi along with Punjab will experience similar weather conditions during September 16-17. Other parts of northwest India may experience isolated to scattered rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.
A few showers are also expected in the central region. West Madhya Pradesh is likely to experience moderate to widespread rainfall on September 14. Vidarbha may experience widespread rainfall during 14-15. September and Chhattisgarh during 14-16 September. After that, isolated to scattered showers are likely to continue in these areas until September 19.
In East India, Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to experience moderate to widespread rainfall during September 16-19. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to witness such rainfall during September 14-19.
Gangetic West Bengal may experience widespread rainfall during September 16-19, while Bihar is likely to experience similar conditions during September 16-17. Odisha is expected to receive moderate to widespread rainfall on September 14.
The northeast region is likely to remain wet, with moderate to widespread rainfall forecast over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during 14-17. September. Rainfall is expected to be more isolated and scattered during September 18-19. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely over parts of the region, especially over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam and Meghalaya.
West India, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa and Saurashtra and Kutch are likely to experience moderate to widespread rainfall during September 14-15. Thereafter, rainfall is expected to become isolated to scattered over the region till September 19, while thunderstorms and lightning may affect parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat in the first few days.
The southern peninsula of India is occasional rain is also expected. Kerala and Mahe are likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall during September 14-15, while Lakshadweep is expected to remain wet throughout September 14-19. Isolated to scattered showers are likely over Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till September 19.
Monsoon deficit
The forecast of widespread rainfall comes amid a deficient southwest monsoon, with cumulative rainfall across India from June 1 to September 12 at 662.3 mm against the normal 778.6 mm, a deficit of 15%.
Meanwhile, exceptionally heavy rainfall (30 cm or more) was recorded over the Gujarat region during the last 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday. Very heavy rainfall (12-20 cm) was reported in Vidarbha, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Konkan and Telangana. Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) was recorded over West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
