Malkajgiri police seek seven-day remand for ex-army Havaldar in Bolarum arms theft case

The Malkajgiri police will on Tuesday (September 15) file a seven-day judicial remand for ex-army Havaldar Upputholla Mallesh (37), who was arrested in connection with the theft of firearms and ammunition from 20 Battalion, Madras Regiment, in Bolarum.

The motion is filed on Tuesday, as the court will be closed on Saturday and Monday. The police want to interrogate Mallesh in detail to find out his motive for stealing the weapons and to find out if others were involved in the theft.

Mallesh, who retired from the Army on June 30 after 16 years of service, was arrested on Friday, September 11, after investigators recovered all the stolen firearms and ammunition from various locations.

On August 30, he allegedly entered the regiment through the Kargil Gate at around 11 pm, broke the Kote and removed the firearms. He then allegedly spent about an hour breaking open the magazine and collected ammunition matching the stolen guns.

Mallesh’s exact motive has yet to be determined. Police said he was unhappy about leaving the service, but investigators are questioning him to determine if that was the only motive and if anyone else was involved in the theft.
