Tamil Nadu’s first dedicated skate park was inaugurated in Ooty

On Friday (September 11, 2026), District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru inaugurated a dedicated skate park, the first of its kind to be built by the Tamil Nadu government, at Buttfire near Udhagamandalam.

The skate park was built on a 2-acre plot at a cost of ₹1.85 crore with funds allocated from the Special Area Development Scheme. The skate park includes an ice rink measuring 110 meters in length built at a cost of ₹ 49.85 lakh. It also has other skateboarding features including a bowling alley, pump track, ramp, kicker rails, ledge, hip ramp built at a cost of ₹1.35 crore.

Ms Tanneeru told reporters that it was the first time the government had created an infrastructure for ice skating that required a lot of technical expertise. The work was completed by the Department of Public Works with expert skatepark builders.

She said a total of 30 skateboarders and local residents participated in the three-day skating competition from September 11 to 13 at the park. The Collector said the facility would benefit skaters in the district participating in national level events.

The three-day event at the skatepark is set for competitions, games, workshops, music and other activities. Admission to the park on those days is free, officials said.
