Delhi Police and central security agencies have stepped up vigilance in the capital ahead of the upcoming BRICS summit after the Intelligence Bureau (IB) warned of possible attempts to disrupt VVIP movement, disrupt security arrangements and cause riots, top IB sources told ANI.
Security entrances flagged potential threats including graffiti, drone activity and attempts to disrupt VVIP routes. In response, agencies have strengthened surveillance and intelligence gathering in key areas.
The threat assessment is based on country-specific and issue-specific inputs, with agencies believing that disputes and sensitive issues involving participating countries could be used to organize protests or disrupt the summit.
According to sources cited by ANI, China-related Tibetan protests and Russia-related issues are among the factors being considered in the security assessment.
Threats related to Khalistan have also been flagged, with agencies receiving emails and other information related to the issue from time to time, the sources added.
Social media under surveillance
Security agencies are closely monitoring social media platforms and digital communication channels for protest calls, mobilization efforts, provocative content and indications of planned graffiti or other disruptive activities.
Surveillance has been stepped up around summit venues, hotels where delegates are likely to stay, VVIP routes, important facilities and major transport hubs.
The Delhi Police and central security and intelligence agencies are also maintaining real-time coordination and information sharing to identify potential threats and prevent attempts to disrupt the high-profile event.
India to host 18th BRICS summit
India will be on 12-13 September to host the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi. The summit will mark India’s fourth BRICS chairmanship in 2026.
The India Presidency is guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Collaboration and Sustainability”.
The theme reflects India’s focus on strengthening existing achievements and institutional effectiveness, putting development, sustainability and innovation at the center of the agenda.
It also highlights the aspirations of the Global South, where India seeks to strengthen BRICS as a constructive, solution-oriented forum.
