Six police officers, including a sub-inspector, were suspended for alleged dereliction of duty after explosives were found on May 10 near the route used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Bengaluru.

The suspension order was issued by Superintendent of Police, Bengaluru South, Srinivas Gowda in connection with the recovery of a box filled with explosives near Vaderahalli Gate in Bengaluru South taluk.

According to police sources, the explosives were found near the road leading to the Art of Living Foundation ashram where the Prime Minister was scheduled to attend a programme.

The suspended employees include a sub-inspector, an assistant sub-inspector and four constables who were deployed on bandobast duty during the prime minister’s visit. Officials said security in the area where the suspicious box was found is the responsibility of workers who have been suspended for alleged negligence and lack of vigilance.

Police said the suspicious box was spotted by a constable around 9am, almost two hours before the Prime Minister arrived. The bomb disposal unit was immediately alerted and rushed to the scene.

Upon investigation, the box was found to contain explosive materials. The explosives were safely secured after which security agencies conducted intensive re-checking of the entire route before allowing the Prime Minister’s convoy to proceed.

Meanwhile, the police are still groping in the dark as to how the explosives ended up on the PM convoy route.
