MPSC aspirant Abhijeet Dipke reportedly quits life in Pune to visit family

On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the police said that a 28-year-old Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) aspirant allegedly ended his life in Pune. This led to a political outcry against the government, with the Congress holding the government responsible for the deaths. Maharashtra Congress president Harshawardhan Sapkal has called for the resignation of MPSC chairman and secretary. Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke expressed concern over the death. On Thursday, he is going to visit Dharashiv, the birthplace of the deceased youth, to meet the family.

“Most civil service applicants come from very humble backgrounds, mainly rural and agricultural, so their lives are important to them and their families as well. Many students are struggling to meet their expenses. Paper leaks and exam delays have shattered applicants’ dreams. How long will applicants tolerate this?” Mr Dipke said in a video posted on Wednesday.

He said the government needs to introspect why the aspirant allegedly ended his own life. Adding that reports of paper leak, examination cancellations are leading to stress among the students, he said the aspirants were facing immense psychological pressure due to these factors.

Harshawardhan Sapkal said the government should act immediately. “What investigation will be done in this now? There are no reforms yet in the process of conducting exams. Mr. Bhimanwar is a friend of Devendra Fadnavis. Where is the arrogance coming from? Why has there been no resignation yet?” he asked.

28-year-old Prathamesh Deshmukh allegedly had a debt of around ₹2.5 million on his head, police said. Hailing from Paranda, he lived in a rented accommodation in Pune for several years to prepare for MPSC. He was reportedly found dead in a room in his home on Wednesday morning. He allegedly wrote a note with the names of about 18 people who had lent him money but were not to be repaid.

MPSC students and aspirants staged massive protests, especially in cities like Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, amid widespread anger over alleged examination irregularities, paper leaks and delays in the recruitment process. They demanded the immediate removal of MPSC chairman Vivek Bhimanvar and accused him of compromising the credibility of the exam. The students also demanded a comprehensive forensic audit of the exams and a rigorous independent probe into past entrance exams.
